LETTER of
RECOMMENDATION
Columbus Public Schools' Lindbergh
Elementary
April 07, 2000
Recommendation for
Dr. Penney Brooks
To Whom It May
Concern,
I have worked with
Dr. Penney Brooks for nine years, both at Dana Elementary and at
Lindbergh Elementary, where she was assigned as a Speech and Language
Pathologist. For eight of those years, I was a classroom teacher. Dr.
Brooks was always eager to work collaboratively to better meet the
individual needs of students. As Literacy Facilitator at Lindbergh, I
have worked closely with her to coordinate our Literacy efforts.
She has strongly
supported our Comprehensive Literacy Plan at Lindbergh, and has been a
valuable asset in implementing the Six Required Components. Dr. Brooks
has a strong interest in the relationship between oral language and
reading. Her presentations during staff in-services have been very well
received, and staff members seek out her professional knowledge and
advice.
I am continually
impressed with her dedication to children, her professional knowledge,
her commitment to continued professional growth, and her ability to
motivate students and staff members. Dr. Brooks reflects on current
practices, closely monitors student performance, incorporates proven,
research-based methods and strategies, and continuously seeks more
effective ways to meet each student's needs.
Dr. Penney Brooks'
sincerity, enthusiasm, and positive attitude come across strongly in her
dealings with students, parents, and staff members. She is articulate,
organized, knowledgeable, and conscientious. All of these qualities
would be assets in the position of Reading/Language Arts and Safety Net
Coordinator.
Sincerely,

Karen J. Voellmecke

April 3, 2000 To Whom It May
Concern:
For the last year, I have had the pleasure of
teaching and observing Dr. Penney Brooks, an Orton-Gillingham tutor in
training at The Language Training Institute at Marburn Academy. I have
been extremely impressed with Dr. Brooks’ dedication, diligence,
intelligence and intuitiveness. She provides consistent support and
instruction for her students. Dr. Brooks understands the need to
recognize the global child, to develop instructional strategies for
helping the child achieve their maximum potential in all areas of
concern, and to creatively implement t instruction. I was extremely
impressed with her ability to grasp a concept and project its
implications for remediation and classroom instruction.
Dr. Brooks consistently demonstrates strong
skills and insight far beyond her experience with the Orton-Gillingham
approach, but continues to seek educational opportunities. She seizes
every opportunity to Engage Peers and supervisors in discussions
concerning the planning and execution of remediation strategies. She
understands the needto be prescriptive and diagnostic in her teaching.
As the Director of the Language Training
Institute at Marburn Academy and Penney's supervisor, I have continued
to be impressed with her ability to identify and meet the needs of her
students. Dr. Brooks has demonstrated her ability to communicate clearly
and resolve potential comfits, which is an asset and a requirement for
the Reading/Language Arts and Safety Nets Coordinator position. Her
genuine goodwill and natural affinity for problem solving, supports her
ability to set high expectations for student behavior and academic
achievement, as well as achieve positive working relationships with
parents, staff, and supervisors.
Dr. Brooks clearly identifies her student's
needs and sets appropriate goals. Her teaching plans are thoughtful and
prescriptive. She is competent and professional in her implementation of
these plans, even with difficult and complicated students.
Her strong commitment and dedication to her
students, her unique understanding of language development and reading
issues, her demonstrated success in the
Orton-Gillingham approach, her positive
attitude and good and good communication skills, and her excellent
problem sc4ving strategies for students and staff provide Dr. Brooks
with the necessary skills for this position.
It appears to me that Dr. Penney Brooks is a
highly motivated, intelligent, dedicated and creative leader, making her
an asset in a leadership role. I give her my highest recommendation.
